Every lead we make comes from our family workshop at Ritega – handcrafted, using materials we've tested ourselves in the field. We make leads for all dog breeds and all conditions: everyday city walks, countryside trips, demanding training sessions, canicross and competitive dog sports. Our range covers all the lead types you're likely to need – in several materials, with various hardware options and dozens of colours.

How to choose the right dog lead — a practical guide ↓

Over the years we've seen most of the mistakes people make when choosing a lead. The two most common: the lead is too narrow for a dog that pulls, or the hardware can't handle the combination of pressure, grit and road salt.

How big and strong is your dog?
  • Up to 10 kg — 10–15 mm strap, lightweight clip
  • 10–35 kg — 15–20 mm strap, metal clip
  • Over 35 kg, active and large dogs — 20–25 mm strap, heavy-duty metal hardware

Which lead type suits your situation?
  • Standard fixed lead — the everyday choice for city walks and countryside. Length 120–200 cm.
  • Convertible lead — clips at both ends, adjustable length or worn hands-free across the body. Our customers' most popular choice for an all-round lead.
  • Long training lead (tracking line) — 10–20 m trailing lead for recall training. The rubberised version doesn't slip in wet grass and won't absorb water — the go-to for most gun dog handlers.
  • Bungee lead (with shock absorber) — the elastic section absorbs sudden lunges. Essential for canicross, cycling or dogtrekking.

Which material should you choose?
  • Rubberised strap (Aqua/PVC/TPU) — waterproof, won't absorb dirt or odours, a quick rinse after a muddy walk is all it takes. Best choice for dogs in tough terrain or water. Similar properties to Biothane leads.
  • Cotton lead with rubber core — soft in the hand, lightweight. Good for everyday walks in standard conditions.
  • Camo webbing — tough textile strap with hardware of your choice. A proven option for field use and training.
  • Hexa leads — hexagonal surface texture that significantly improves grip when wet and wipes clean easily. Our best-selling model.
  • Hi-vis and reflective leads — better visibility at dawn, dusk and night at an accessible price point.

Things to watch out for
  • Retractable leads (flexi) — keep constant tension on the line, which teaches the dog to pull without either of you realising. Not suitable for strong or reactive dogs, or busy environments.
  • Hardware quality matters — from production we know that the clip is nearly always the first thing to fail, not the strap. Always choose metal hardware for strong dogs.

Ritega Tip

The part we replace most often for customers is the clip — damaged by grit and road salt, not the strap itself. That's why for dogs over 20 kg we always go for medium or large hardware. Smaller clips are fine for calm walks with a lighter dog. But as soon as the dog pulls or the lead takes a beating in harsh conditions, a stronger clip is always the better call.

Frequently asked questions about dog leads (FAQ)

Which lead for a dog that pulls?
A fixed or convertible lead with a strap at least 20 mm wide. Retractable leads are not suitable for pullers — they silently reward the behaviour. The right collar matters too.
What is a convertible lead and how does it work?
It has clips at both ends and several metal rings along the length. You can adjust it from about 1 m to 4 m, or wear it hands-free over the shoulder or around the waist.
Which lead for tracking and recall training?
A long training lead (tracking line) in 10–20 m length that the dog drags behind them during recall work. The Hexa version doesn't slip in the hand or in mud — which is why most gun dog handlers prefer it.
Which lead for canicross or cycling?
A bungee lead with a shock absorber — the elastic section absorbs sudden lunges and protects your back as well as the dog's neck. Pair it with a waist belt to keep your hands free.
Which lead for a puppy?
A lightweight lead with a clip sized to the puppy. For recall training, add a 10 m tracking line — let the puppy drag it along the ground while you train, without losing control of their movement.
Are Ritega's rubberised leads genuinely waterproof?
Yes. The PVC/TPU coating doesn't absorb water, dirt or odours. A quick rinse after a muddy walk is all you need — no drying time, no lingering smells.
