Every collar we make comes from our family workshop at Ritega – handcrafted, using materials we've tested ourselves in the field. We make collars for all dog breeds and all conditions: everyday walks, countryside adventures, demanding training sessions and competitive dog sports. Our range covers all the collar types you're likely to need – in several materials, with various hardware options and dozens of colours.

How to choose the right collar — a practical guide ↓

Over the years we've made hundreds of custom collars and seen most of the mistakes people make when choosing one. The two most common: the collar is too narrow for the dog, or the hardware isn't up to the job and fails before the strap does. Here's what we always ask before making a recommendation.

Measure the neck — and leave room to move

Measure the neck circumference where the dog wears the collar. Add 2–3 cm to that measurement. A correctly fitted collar should allow two fingers to slide underneath comfortably.

Watch out with greyhounds, whippets and salukis – their heads are narrower than their necks, making it easy to back out of a standard collar. We always recommend a martingale for these breeds.

Width protects the cervical spine

Width matters — but so does collar type. Choosing the wrong type can actually make a wider collar counterproductive. The best approach is to get the dog comfortable walking on a collar first, then consider going wider.

Which material should you choose?

The material determines how the collar behaves in different conditions.

  • Hexa and Aqua (PVC/TPU) — waterproof, won't absorb dirt or odours. A quick rinse after a muddy walk is all it takes. Best for dogs that swim or work in tough terrain.
  • Nylon and fabric — lightweight, available in many colours. Good for everyday use in standard conditions.
  • Softshell KARA — neoprene lining for dogs with sensitive skin, thick coats, or those wearing a collar all day long.
  • Camo webbing — tough textile strap with hardware of your choice. A proven combination for field use at a fair price.

Collar type by purpose
  • Martingale — the go-to for dogs that slip out of collars or have a broader neck than head. Safe and straightforward.
  • Buckle or prong closure — the classic for everyday walks. Elegant, reliable and time-tested.
  • Prong collars — used by experienced trainers for specific training purposes. Require knowledge and correct fitting.
  • Defender programme — training collars from our workshop built for tough terrain and working dog training. Robust construction, metal hardware, no compromises.

Things to watch out for
  • Growing puppies — check the collar every week. Puppies grow in spurts and the collar can become dangerously tight faster than you'd expect.
  • Chain slip collars — can snag the coat of long-haired breeds or leave a grey residue on light-coloured fur. That said, they remain the best tool for training and teaching.
  • Water-loving dogs — nylon or leather collars take a long time to dry and can cause skin irritation. Go for Aqua or Hexa material.

A collar suits dogs with good leash manners or those in training. A harness is the better choice for brachycephalic breeds (pug, French bulldog) or for sports like canicross.
Are Hexa and Aqua collars genuinely waterproof?
Yes. The PVC/TPU coating doesn't absorb water, dirt or odours. A quick rinse after a muddy walk is all you need.
How often should I replace the collar?
It depends on the material and how hard it's used. Check the hardware, buckles and strap regularly — replace worn parts before they fail. Regular maintenance matters too: lubricate metal prongs and inspect the strap for damage.
How do I care for the collar?
Lubricate metal prongs regularly, check the strap for wear and clean all joints — especially on riveted collars. Hexa and Aqua collars just need a rinse under running water and a wipe with a cloth.
